Stephen and Ayesha Curry are using their platform to launch a new scholarship fund that will benefit young women in the Bay Area interested in pursuing careers and college tracks within the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields.
It was on Friday (March 8th) that the Steph & Ayesha Curry Family Foundation announced that the scholarship would come to life, stemming from the challenge from 9-year-old Riley Morrison who asked Curry why his Under Armour sneaker line didn't include a colorway for girls. In honor of Morrison and International Women's Day, the NBA star launched a purple colorway for his Curry 6 sneaker which was co-designed by Morrison.
The Durry Foundation reports that Steph was not comfortable simply profiting off of Morrison's design and so he went to Under Armour to arrange for profits from the shoe to go toward a scholarship "that will impact girls for years to come.”
The annual scholarship will be awarded to a college-bound female student in the Bay Area "who has shown an aptitude for overcoming adversity, catalyzing change within her community and demonstrating excellence in a STEM-related field of study.”
It is is a $30,000 award that will be paid out over the span of two years, requiring the recipient to maintain a GPA of at least 3.0.
The first winner was announced on Friday at the Golden State matchup against the Denver Nuggets.
